The Arizona Diamondbacks and San Francisco Giants square off in a three-game set at AT&T Park with the first game set for Tuesday night and a first pitch at 10:15PM Eastern Time. This will be the final series of a ten game road trip for the Diamondbacks who are 61-82 (-21.4) in road games the last 2 seasons and 2-8 (-7.8) after 7 or more consecutive road games this season. San Fran returns home off an eleven game road trip of their own. Arizona is 55-70 (-17.8) on the season overall and out of the playoff hunt while San Francisco is 6.5 games behind the division leading Dodgers and 3.5 back of second place Colorado with a record of 67-57 (+10.1). The Giants have been extremely tough at home posting a record of 39-20 (+15.5) this season. That�s not good news for this Arizona team as they are 42-68 (-29.6) when playing against a team with a winning record the last two seasons. The difference in the two teams can easily be explained when you see that San Fran is ranked 1 in pitching with an ERA of 3.53 with opponents hitting .237 and have an OBP of .312 against them. The Diamondbacks are ranked 15 in pitching with an ERA of 4.33 with opponents hitting .264 and have an OBP of .329 against them. At the plate we see much of the same with the Giants ranked 16 in hitting with a batting average of .261 averaging 4.0 runs per game with an OPS of .700. Arizona is ranked 28 in hitting with a batting average of .252 averaging 4.4 runs per game and an OPS of .742. The Diamondbacks have really struggled of late at the plate and we know they are 40-54 (-21.9) after batting .240 or worse over a 10 game span the last 2 seasons. Arizona will send right-hander Dan Haren to the bump with his 12-8 record and ERA of 2.74. He has a record of 6-3 with a 3.41 ERA on the road this season but recently he has struggled. Haren is coming off a horrible performance at Philly in his last start where he pitched for 5 innings giving up 6 earned runs on 9 hits including three homeruns in an 8 to 1 loss. Prior to that start he won at home versus the Dodgers 4 to 1 but his previous road start saw him lose in Washington 5 to 2 throwing for 6 innings giving up 5 earned runs on 7 hits and two homeruns. The Giants will send right-hander Matt Cain to the hill with his 12-4 record and ERA of 2.43. When Cain takes the bump at home he is 6-2 with an ERA of 2.37 and the Giants are 10-2 in his 12 home starts this season. He lost his last start throwing for 8 innings in Cincinnati giving up 1 earned run on 8 hits with 3 strikeouts in a 2 to 1 loss. On the technical front we have two MLB Systems that are active for tonight�s game. The first tells us to Play AGAINST MLB (NL) road underdogs who allow 4.8 or more runs per game against a starting pitcher whose WHIP is 1.000 or better over his last five starts. This system is 108-34 over the last five seasons for +49.1 units. The second system tells us to Play ON MLB (NL) favorites in this price range who average scoring 4.1 runs or less per game facing a starter whose ERA is 3.70 or better and a bullpen who has a WHIP of 1.350 or better on the season. In fact, the Lions went 0-16 last season and their defense hasn't improved much as Atlanta scored 26 points during the first week of Preseason. It has gotten so bad for the Reds that in their last 29 losses, they would be just 3-26 to a runline of +1.5. The Brewers have been outstanding behind Jeff Suppan. When the Brew Crew has allowed two runs or less in their previous game, they have turned in a 13-4 mark in that situation with Suppan on the bump. The Reds are heading nowhere, the lineup is cold and they are simply playing out the string. They have also dropped their last four games played in Milwaukee, and I think that goes to five tonight. I'm going with Milwaukee here.

The Twins could have really caved in last night trailing 5-1 heading into the sixth, but ended up winning easily 9-6 and have the momentum coming in here after a 16 hit explosion. The Twins began the season at 0-4 with Scott Baker on the hill, but since then they have been an impressive 12-7 and also 5-3 in his last eight road starts. The Rangers have not been successful in Kevin Millwood's last six starts where they are just 2-4 and things don't get much easier here. Millwood has had fits with the Twins as he has taken the goose-egg at 0-6 for his career with a 6.00 ERA allowing 82 hits in just 57 innings and walking 21 as well, so just about two base runners per inning. Texas bullpen overworked last night puts the Twins in a good spot here and I'll go with them.

Here today we go with the Rays in what promises to be a complete pitching mismatch with Jason Berken vs. David Price. Neither one of these pitchers will go deep in the game, but when they leave the game they will be leaving under completely different circumstances. Berken will face the Rays for the first time and that's too bad as he has a 8.76 ERA in his last three starts and a 8.48 ERA on the road this year. Orioles are 2-12 in Berken's last 14 overall starts and 1-10 when he is an underdog. The last time he completed 7 innings was May 31st. Which almost guarantees the Rays will see the O's bullpen for 2+ innings that has gone down hill since losing their closer to the Dodgers. They have a 6.10 ERA last 10, 7.40 Last 5, and the bullpen available for Tuesday has a 8.15 ERA in their last 3 games. Berken has not been impressive with a 41:29 K:BB ratio which really works to the Rays strengths and weaknesses as they are #3 in taking walks which should push Berken out of this game even earlier and they are #4 in K's which is good since Berken is not a strikeout guy. David Price going for the Rays has been great at home with a 2.72 ERA and a fabulous 38:18 K:BB ratio. He will go up against the O's who are #18 in HR and #24 in BB which does not pan out well against Price. Orioles have just been awful against LHP on the road this year with a .222 average and are scoring only 2.80 runs per 9 innings. In their last five they are batting .125 and scoring 1.17 runs per 9. Why it's not a premium play? Plain and simple the Rays have not seen Berken before. What does that mean? It means that he may be able to work quickly through the lineup the first time. When playing run lines I like to know that a team can really beat up on a hitter the first time around. Good luck!

Don't look now but the Nationals are winning! They have posted seven straight wins and go for a sweep over the Diamondbacks this afternoon. I think they get it. Are the Nationals as good as they are playing right now? No. But they weren't as bad as their record indicated before this run, either. Their offense has been decent all season (4.6 runs per game). The problem for them has been pitching. J.D. Martin doesn't instill a whole lot of confidence, but I think he'll do well enough vs. Yusmeiro Petit who hasn't done any better this season. And with the Nats averaging 6.9 runs per game over their win streak, I like them here at home. Arizona is a losing road team in the midst of a long road trip. They have gone 1-7 this season after 7+ straight road games. When favoried at -100 to -150, the D-Backs are just 19-33 this season. Petit is 1-8 as a favorite over the past two seasons. I like the home team here.

Anaheim starter Santana has struggled big time during the season, but most of those struggles have occurred in home starts. He has allowed a 255 BA and 4.28 ERA in road games. CWS starter Danks has allowed 15 ER in his past 4 starts (4,4,3,4) and 24 hits spanning 23.2 IP. He does rank 9th in the AL in BA allowed at 241, but the fatigue factor is quite evident allowing more hits than innings pitched and having thrown a ton of pitches. I'm smarter than that and I know in this business you are only as good as your last win. Clearly I'm not chasing or this would be another POD. Again the hole I thought Nick Johnson would leave in this lineup is not what I thought, but I still think this young team (Nats) will run into issues with a quality starter. Alright let's break it down on Thursday with a frustrating pitcher Chris Volstad and the reason why this is a premium play. Volstad has solid stuff he can strike hitters out, but struggles with his command. If you don't believe me in two starts against the Nationals this year he has 12 K's in 9.1 IP. Just shows you the capability he has to dominate this Nats lineup, but in those 2 starts he had 9 BB, and only 8 H, but that's 17 base runners he handed out yet he only gave up 4ER. Just imagine if he has command of his fastball. Which he has had in his last start with just 1 BB. In fact in 4 of his last 6 games he's given up 1BB or less, but in between were two 4BB performances and that's what worries me about him and the reason this is not a premium selection. The Marlins are 12-5 in Volstad's last 17 road starts. On the other side of the ball we have Craig Stammen who really has not impressed me this year. The Marlins collectively are 7-20 and Hanley Ramirez has 2 hits. Ramirez has been solid during day play and the Marlins actually score more runs per game during the day than they do at night. It's not like they don't have a plan for Stammen as I said they faced him before and they were successful. So let's get some of the money back that we lost on the Marlins the last 2 days which was 6 units.

STL -131: The NYM are heading in the wrong direction in the last 7 games losing 5 of the 7. Yesterday they even lost with there ace Santana on the mound. The Cardinals lineup is healthy and putting up runs at a breakneck rate, yesterday scoring 12 runs. On the mound for STL is Lohse who is making his 5th start since coming back from the Disabled list. Each game he has been much better and last game he went 6 innings only allowing 1 run and 1 walk against the best team in the NL LA Dodgers. Today he will have no problem with the banged up NYM. The Mets don't have any consistent players that can produce on an everyday basis. On the other side the Cards have been great since getting Holiday and Derosa to help out with King Albert. The Mets have starter Niese who has had trouble since coming to start 4 games ago. He has given up 12 runs in 24 innings since coming up to the big leagues. Arizona took Game One of their three-game series versus Pittsburgh 6 to 0 on Tuesday night. The Diamondbacks have struggled on the highway this season posting a record of 47-59 SU for -14.1 Units averaging 4.2 runs per game with a batting average of only .230. Pittsburgh has been decent at home this season going 28-21 SU for +6.8 Units averaging 4.7 runs per game with a batting average of .283. The Diamondbacks will send left-hander Doug Davis to the bump with his 5-10 record and ERA of 3.73 this season. Davis has also found the going tough on the road with a record of 2-4 and an ERA of 4.29. Over his last three outings he has only averaged 4.8 innings per start with 13 bases on balls which is not a particularly good sign when your bullpen has an ERA of 4.55 on the road this season along with a WHIP of 1.562. His lone win over that span came against this Pirates team and their starting pitcher Ross Ohlendorf. Davis pitched 6 innings giving up no earned runs with five hits three walks and eight strikeouts in a 7 to 0 win back on July 25th. In that game Ohlendorf didn’t pitch that poorly himself he went 6 innings giving up two earned runs on six hits two walks and two strikeouts in the loss. Arizona is 5-12 overall when Davis takes the bump their last seventeen and 6-18 when he starts on the road. National League Central opponents have given the Diamondbacks and Davis trouble on the highway since 1997 going 1-11 SU for -9.9 Units. Pittsburgh is 5-0 their last five when facing a left-handed starter and 6-0 when Ohlendorf starts at home. Ohlendorf is 7-2 (team 9-2) with an ERA of 3.34 at PNC Park this season and 2-1 his last three outings with an ERA of 3.12. We expect the Pirates to bounce back from their Game One loss and for Ohlendorf to give us a quality start which should be enough to grab a Game Two victory and even this series at a game apiece. Its possible we could see the line move against us here and the Pirates become the favorites but we will still back the host even if we have to lay a short number. Oh may I add the Reds collectively have a .118 avg and that's counting Jay Bruce who is on the DL take him out of the picture and they have just a .097 average. Cubs will face Justin Lehr a journey man minor leagure who at 32 made his first start last week against the Rockies. Lehr was a reliver in 2006 where he posted a 8.62 ERA. Many thought they would never hear from him again, but he has put up solid numbers in the minors and here he is. Just showing you how large the jump is from AAA to the majors is. He won't be up long as he threw just 52 strikes in 97 pitches walking 6 batters and in 5 IP against the Rockies. He was lucky to escape with 3ER on 4H. Don't expect the same luck here as he'll most likely have a "what can I lose attitude" against the Cubs by throwing the ball over the plate and the Cubs will make him pay! Favorite stat: The Reds have lost 76.6% of their home losses by more than 1 run including 7 of their last 8 on this current home stand.

Gallardo will have to rebound from his only start vs. the Dodgers where he went 5 innings and gave up 5ER. Unfortunately for him I just do not see it happening here. He has won 4 out of his last 5 starts and in that time period has reduced his ERA to a very solid 3.19 on the year. Leading the league in strikeouts is bad news for BAL as this lineup strikes out a ton anyway. BAL can't win on the road with the worst record in the AL (16-34 road record). The Rangers are four games back in the American League West and while many think that race is over, I give a lot of credit to Texas for hanging close during the Angels massive run of 17-3 over their last 20 games as the Rangers have gone 11-3 over their last 14 games. Texas is actually in better shape in the Wild Card race as it trails the Red Sox by just 2.5 games. The Rangers are one of the surprises in baseball as pitching was a major concern coming into the season but it has been strong throughout. Oakland lost its weekend series with the Blue Jays and this team is going nowhere. Offensively, it is one of the below average teams in the league but the pitching has been the problem of late. The starting pitching has an ERA of 7.41 over its last 10 games while the bullpen has posted a 5.16 ERA over that span. The A’s send Brett Anderson to the hill and he has been really strong of late as he has allowed three runs or fewer in six of his last seven starts but surprisingly, the majority of that success came on the road. He has a 4.01 ERA and 1.29 WHIP at home which are definitely decent but just three of his seven home starts have been quality outings with Oakland going 2-5 in those games. Dustin Nippert will be making his fourth start this season and while he has been anything but spectacular, he has been good enough to keep Texas in the game. This matchup is mainly about the teams and the value we get in the line that we get which is mostly affected by the starting pitching. The Rangers are 8-2 in their last 10 road games against a team with a losing record while the A’s are 14-29 in their last 43 games against a team with a winning record. Also, Texas is 20-9 against division opponents this season. *3 Texas Rangers Fargo is coming off a PERFECT Sunday as he SWEPT his baseball reports** with all three games ‘Over’! The Rays and Royals take the field at the Trop for the fourth and final game of their series with Tampa leading 2 games to 1 after the Royals captured their first win on Sunday by a final score of 4 to 1. As far as importance is concerned this contest and this month are vital to the Rays if they are to repeat as AL Champs. They are involved in a very tight race in the AL East while the Royals will be spending their postseason at home. Tampa Bay is 57-47 on the season including 33-17 SU (+8.2) at the Trop. The Royals began the year doing something they seldom do, win but they fell back to earth rather rapidly and now find themselves in very familiar territory with a record of 40-63 SU (-23.2). Kansas City has struggled on the highway posting a record of 17-31 SU (-10.4) averaging a mere 3.4 runs per game with a batting average of 238. They will be sending one of the few bright spots for the team to the bump in Zack Greinke who is 10-6 SU with an ERA of 2.08 on the year. He has faced the Rays and Kazmir already this season back on July 18 in Kansas City losing 4 to 2. Greinke threw for 7 innings allowing one earned run on nine hits with seven strikeouts in the loss. The problem for Greinke is the Royals fail to score runs and their bullpen has an ERA of 4.09 on the road with a WHIP of 1.412. He will be facing a Rays team that averages 5.6 runs per game at home with a .275 BA and 5.5 runs per game versus right-handed starters. Kansas City is 6-21 their last 27 versus a team with a winning record, 6-18 their last 24 versus left-handed starters and 8-22 their last 30 when Greinke starts on the road versus a team with a winning record. Tampa Bay will send left-hander Scott Kazmir to the hill with his 5-6 SU record and ERA of 6.22. Even with the high ERA the Rays have managed to post a 9-6 SU record behind Kazmir this season. Kazmir has shown signs of improvement recently with an ERA of 3.32 while the Rays were 2-1 SU in those contests. The Rays are 77-32 their last 109 games when installed as a home favorite, 66-22 their last 88 home games when facing a right-handed starter, 19-7 their last 26 home games when Kazmir takes the bump, Kazmir is 4-0 his last 4 when installed as a home favorite in this price range and 15-2 as a home favorite of -125 to -175 over the last 2 seasons. We will back the host here as they field a much better team and need to win these types of games if they are to have any chance of repeating. He has a 2.70 ERA in his last 5 starts and he's got 1 start vs. Pirates this year going 7 innings and giving up 1ER. He'll face a lineup without Wilson and Sanchez today as this team continues to get weaker and weaker. The Pirates are scoring 0.78 runs per 9 innings in their last 5 and it's going to take them a while to gel and establish a team that can find it's groove again. To me as it stands today the Pirates are the worst team in baseball. However, Vegas is moving the line the other way and it is for no other reason than Ross Ohlendorf. Pirates are 1-7 in their last 8 starts vs. LH starter. Ohlendorf has the 6-2 record and a 3.39 ERA at home this year including a 1.80 ERA in his last 4 home starts. Russ Olendorf has been steadily improving for the Pirates as they have now won five straight home starts with him as a home dog. It looks like a live dog here, so I'll go with the Pirates here.

As a team combined they are 2-20 vs. Gallardo. More on Gallardo here he has a 3.09 ERA and has been consistent at home and on the road with an ERA at home of 3.03. During day starts he has flat out dominated with a 2.36ERA. His main issue is walking batters and that is the only way the Nationals will get to him. My one worry here and is the reason why I'm not taking this as a POD is the Nationals are ranked 2nd in the NL and 5th overall in taking walks. Don't think the Brewers don't know this and I expect Gallardo to go right after these guys. Note the Nats are also 7th in the league in strikeouts so that evens out. Nationals are 11-50 in their last 61 road games vs. a RH starter. J.D. Martin will make his 1st road start of his career and he'll face some intimidating hitters in Fielder and Braun to name a few. Brewers have been hitting RHP well as of late .314avg L5 and .291 L10 games. I expect them to be patient and get to the young RHP who lasted just 4IP giving up 5ER against the Mets in his 1st start.

Yankee lefthander Andy Pettitte has been in the Majors 15 seasons and he goes from facing a starter that is a year older than him in Contreras to now facing somebody who is 11 years younger. Both of these starters have the same record at 8-6, but Pettitte has won his eight games with an ERA more than 1/2 run higher than Floyd, a testament to the excellent run support that the Bombers usually provide for the veteran southpaw. This is especially true when Pettitte pitches on the road, as in his last five starts away from Yankee Stadium in 2009, his pin-striped teammates have scored a total of 35 runs and they are 4-1 in those games. Floyd hasn't faced the Yanks this season, but in the last two years, he's made three appearances against them and it hasn't been pretty as Floyd has a 6.75 ERA in 16 innings. That includes the final game of the 2008 season, also played in Anaheim, where Laffey's opposing pitcher was the same as it is this afternoon: veteran righthander John Lackey. The balls were flying everywhere in that one, as L.A. finally prevailed by a 14-11 margin. Lackey's actually been worse at home this season than on the road, and while it's unlikely these two teams will score 25 runs this afternoon, considering the over is 19-5-1 in the Angels last 25 home games, it could get a little crazy. Looking back further Texas has won 11 of its last 13 games at home. The Tigers continue to struggle on the road as they have lost seven straight and going back to June 13th, they are 4-15 in their last 19 road games so making them the favorite is not the right call here despite Justin Verlander being on the mound. He is having a great season following a disappointing 2008 campaign as he has posted a 3.12 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 21 starts. He has tossed four straight quality outings including one at Yankee Stadium but for the most part, he has struggled away from home. He has a 4.76 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 12 starts with Detroit going just 5-7 in those games. This compares to an 8-1 record in his nine home starts. In nine daytime starts, Verlander has a 1.74 ERA but in 12 starts after the sun sets, he has a 4.24 ERA. He faces off against Scott Feldman who is still getting no respect from the linesmakers. He has a 3.59 ERA on the season but it is even better since coming into the rotation. In his 17 starts alone, he has a 3.04 ERA and that includes 12 quality starts and a run of six in a row. Texas has won five of those last six starts. The Tigers are 16-40 in their last 56 road games against a team with a winning record and that includes a 0-4 record in Verlander’s last four. Last night another Phillies lefty went 6.2 IP giving up 0ER. Cole Hamels in his career is 2-0 12.2IP giving up 3ER vs. the Diamondbacks. He has struggled a bit on the road, but he'll be going up against an offense I think he'll have success against with his change up. Hamels has just 5 BB's in his last 5 starts something I think he'll build on here today facing a team he should be able to beat. The Twins will no doubt be happy to be back home for this series after a nine-game road trip as they are 29-20 at home vs. 21-30 on the road. That win on July 12 over the Sox was par for the course as the Twins have won nine of the last 11 games that these two teams have played at the Metrodome. Take the Twins. Owings has a pretty darn good fastball, but he has trouble getting strike one with that pitch. He throws FB 69%, slider 22%, change 8%. He’ll use the change more at 13% to LH batters instead of the slider. He gets into trouble hanging that pitch, especially to LH hitters. LA Angels -151

Cannot ignore the hitting by LA in this game, batting a whopping .326 as a team against right handers, which is the case tonight, as well as batting .306 against southpaws, overall as a team in the last 10 games. Throw in the fact one of the best hurlers Jered Weaver is on the hill tonight at 10-3 on the year, and he has a 3.41 ERA and 1.18 WHIP on the year to date, and you have the makings of a strong home team, hitting on all cylinders right now with an ace out of the starting rotation leading the way.

Tough to make a case for Scott Baker for the Twins who has an ERA approaching 6 for the season and is just 1 win over .500 as a starter. Looking at recent history the bullpen for Minnesota is weak at best and allow plenty of runners in scoring position with a 5.68 ERA on the season. Adding fuel to the fire tonight is the fact that LA is avenging a 3 game sweep on the road at the hands of the Twins earlier this season, so you know they will have their ears pinned back for this one, and Minnesota is off a series loss at Oakland and are playing their 7th straight road game tonight as well.

Take Tigers @ -115 (2DIMES) (1-5SCALE) I like this play a lot it will be a 2 Dime Free Play rather than a 1 Dime. Today we have our Hot pitcher in Jarrod Washburn going for the Mariners, but that does not bother me at all. A quick run down of Washburn 3-0 0.66WHIP and 0.79ERA in his last three starts. Pretty impressive and Washburn has been quite consistent this year for the most part, but on the road he has had these bumps where he has allowed 4 or 6 ER in 4 of his last 7 road starts. I think he has one of those games against a lineup that hits lefties extremely well and who Washburn has struggled against in the past. His last 2 road starts here he has 9IP and 15ER. So enough on Washburn now onto his opponent Luke French. French has 3 starts, which really is not much to go on, but I'm looking at the quality of opponents he has faced which are the Twins in their dome, and the Yankees @ hitter friendly Yankee Stadium. French has been nothing, but solid and in his only home start he pitched his best game going 6.1 IP giving up 6H and 1ER. Seatle struggles to get runs off LHP 4.43 R/9 on the road which is nothing compared to the Tigers who are scoring 8.17 R/9 vs. LHP at home. The Tigers continue to hit lefties and with Magglio Ordonez who I think is ready to turn the corner they will go on a hot streak. Magglio who has struggled all year is just waiting for Carlos Guillen to be healthy and he's going to get hot. Magglio went 2-3 HR and 4RBI in game 1 of this series. Tigers also have the edge when you look at the important trends here. The Mariners are 17-36 in their L53 games when Washburn is coming off a quality start. To me he's not one to be known to throw back to back quality starts. The Mariners are 1-7 in Washburn's L8 starts as an under dog. Again Vegas is usually right when they pick him as an under dog. The Tigers success against LHP has been there all season they are 14-2 in their L16 overall vs. LH starters.

The numbers don’t end there as Buehrle is 6-1 his last 7 overall, 8-1 his last 9 at home when facing a team with a winning record and 10-0 (+10.0) when the money line is -100 to -150 this season. The Rays will send Scott Kazmir to the hill with his record of 4-5 on the season and an ERA of 6.62. That record includes a 3-2 mark on the highway with an ERA of 3.37 this season. Kazmir is coming in off a quality start at KC on Saturday throwing for 6 innings allowing one earned run on 4 hits and 3 strikeouts. This is not necessarily good news for Rays backers as Kazmir is only 1-6 his last 7 starts following a quality start in his last outing. Tampa Bay is 10-22 (-14.4) on the road when the money line is +125 to -125 this season. The White Sox will use the momentum gained from Wednesday’s win and take game four and the series from the defending AL Champs on Thursday afternoon at US Cellular Field.
